Dr. Alan Stern is a member of the Board of Directors. He is a planetary scientist, space program executive, aerospace consultant, and author. He currently runs his own aerospace consulting practice and has over 30 years of experience in space instrument development, with a concentration in ultraviolet technologies. Alan served as NASA’s chief of all space and Earth science programs, directing a $4.4B organization with 93 separate flight missions and a program of over 3,000 research grants. He led NASA’s $880M New Horizons mission that successfully explored the Pluto system and is now exploring the Kuiper Belt, the farthest exploration in the history of humankind.
In 2018, he was named by the Administration to the U.S. National Science Board. Alan serves as the Chief Science Officer of World View and is the CEO of The Golden Spike Company. He previously served as Associate Vice President and Special Assistant to the President at the Southwest Research Institute, the Director of the Florida Space Institute, and Chief Scientist and Mission Architect for Moon Express. He served as a board member of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, an advisory board member of Lowell Observatory, and Board Chairman of the Commercial Space Federation.
Alan has a B.S. in Physics, B.A. in Astronomy, and twin M.S. degrees in aerospace engineering and planetary atmospheres from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his doctorate in astrophysics and planetary science from the University of Colorado. He and his wife, Carole, have two daughters and a son and reside near Boulder, CO.
